Let’s go over the facts
The youth have the power. But we don’t use it.
The 26th amendment lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. Today, young voters make up a majority of the voting population. Yet, historically this number is not reflected in voter turnout. In fact, voters over the age of 60 are three times as likely to turnout than voters under 30. The United States has one of the lowest youth voter turnout in the world. This is embarrassing. Because seriously, who has the power? We do, but only if we use it.
According to Tufts CIRCLE, an estimated 50% of youth aged 18-29 voted in the 2020 election. This is up 11% from the 2016 elections, but still not enough. These past 3 voting cycles have had record numbers of youth turnout, but it is still not enough.
The youth vote is often the key at winning battleground states. We saw this in the 2012 presidential election, where the vote of young people turned Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and Pennsylvania blue in favor of Obama. Had these voters not turned out, it is likely that the election would have gone in an entirely different direction. We hold the power to transform American democracy.
Do not let complex policies stop you. DEADLINES for voter registration differ drastically between states. 21 states allow SAME DAY VOTER REGISTRATION You don't even need to go to the polls to turn out, you can VOTE BY MAIL.
